Chapter 3

MEANWHILE

Slowly her eyes opened a small sliver and she tried to discern what her surroundings were even though they were blurry at first.

“She’s awake!” A voice cried in happiness and she saw a person go off out of the room.

“I’m in a hospital,”she reasoned as she lay there, hearing people come back towards the door,”But.... who am I?”

She struggled to sit up as she saw a few people quickly enter the room and make their way for the bed. A man, perhaps in his mid 40’s and a woman looking slightly younger but not by much were there as well as the doctor. The man looked to be Japanese while the woman had an Americanish look to her and they held hands as they stood by the bed looking down at her.

“It’s amazing she recovered consciousness so quickly. How are you feeling Miss Suzanna?”

“Suzanna,”she whispered in response to the doctors question,”Is that my name?”

“Yes dear,”the woman said coming forward and leaning down to gently hug her,”We were so worried when you disappeared all those years ago but we never stopped looking for you. Then thankfully we got a call from the hospital that you were here.”

“Do you remember what happened that caused your injuries Miss?” The doctor asked as he looked at a chart then back to her.

“No, I don’t remember anything... “

“Until she remembers things you two will have to take her back to your home to recover,”the doctor said.

“Of course,”her father replied,”When will she be discharged?”

“Seeing as she regained consciousness and the injuries have pretty much healed, as early as tomorrow afternoon,”the doctor said as he set the clip board down.

“So soon?”her mother asked as she took Suzanna’s hand in her own with her free hand.

“Yes,”the doctor explained,”She was in such good condition before the accident or whatever apparently that her body will only have a few bruises on it as well as the medical knowledge we had to heal her. And the fact she’s been in here for two weeks already.”

“Fine, tomorrow we’ll pick her up,”her father said as he pulled gently on his wife’s shoulders,”We should go now to let her rest and to get the house ready.”

Nodding absently the woman let go of Suzanna’s hand and they stepped back.

“Well be back to pick you up tomorrow. We love you,”her mother said.

“Ok,”Suzanna replied and as they left with the doctor she flipped on the television.

“So I am Suzanna,”she thought to herself, ignoring the news as it droned on about the colonies and other things,”Maybe they can help me remember.”

She sighed softly and left the television on as she laid back, closing her eyes to take a nap and think things over. The next day as the car pulled up infront of the large estate Suzanna looked out at it. Her parents took her inside and settled her in her old room. After looking around it for a bit she asked for some time alone and went for a walk.

Walking along the road down through the town she caught the eye of many of the people there for the regal way she walked and the way the little black sundress looked on her with her long hair left loose down her back. She looked in some of the windows as she walked, and her hand kept going to the small purse she carried on her left shoulder.

“Somehow this feels strange,”she thought,”But I don’t remember why a purse feels so odd. Oh well. I’ll remember soon enough.”

As she continued walking she got to the overlook point that overlooked the lake and the Lake Victoria training center. She leaned against the railing and looked out at the base. Something seemed familiar about it, she couldn’t place it though and soon her silent thoughts were interupted by a flea buzzing past her face.

“Nice view isn’t it?”

The male voice took her by surprise and she quickly turned and took a step back to face the man who had come up beside her.

“Yes, it’s beautiful,”she said quietly and turned her head to look out over it again.

“Say.... there’s a path through these woods that I could show you that takes you to an even better view,”he said as he looked at her, his eyes obviously not making contact with her eyes but something else. She took another step back and he grinned, stepping forward quickly and closing the space between them. Putting a hand on her arm tightly he said,”C’mon” and with the threat of violence forced her to go down the path which led straight to the base if you followed it far enough. Going about 3/4 of the way down the path he had her stop and lessening his grip, tried to go kiss her. Somehow through a burst of adrenaline she managed to push him away and tear her arm free of his grasp, running the rest of the way down the path. Behind her she could hear him cursing and thundering, his breaths agonized from the effort but she found herself having no problems with the fast paced chase.

Finally she emerged from the path a few feet from the gate to the base and she could still hear him behind her. Quickly running to the guards posted at the gate she stopped and quickly explained that she needed some help. The guards though did a double take when they saw her.

“Lieutenant Okami?” One of them stuttered as he took a step backward.

“But you’re.. supposed to be... dead..”The other one added quietly, taking two steps backwards.

“Lieutenant Okami?”She asked, hearing the man get closer to the bottom of the path.

“I’m not sure who you’re talking about... My name is Suzanna. Please, do something,”she said as she turned and the man burst out on the street still coming at her.

He stopped when he got near the two guards and her and calmed himself down slightly.

“Thank you,”he said as he tried to catch his breath,”She and I had a small disagreement and she took off before I could apologize. I’m sorry if she bothered you men. You know how women are.”

He did a phony chuckle while going to try and put hand on her arm again though this time another voice interupted.

“No.. I don’t think it was a small disagreement,”the voice said and out of the shadows a man stepped foward his mask glinting in the sun.
