Over the summer and fall of 2000 I attended a few interesting events. The New York Anime Film Festival and the Crüxshadows concert at Club Laga.
Reviews:
New York Anime Film Festival
Amano sama seemed to be the least talkative one there, speaking Japanese and using a translator as did some of the other guests. His movie 1001 Nights in my opinion was very good and the whole audience seemed to like it. Up next there was the CG movie A lice. I thought it was pretty good.. I liked the characters and the plot was good as well. Following Alice was a short break and then two panels. First was the artists panel with Amano, Gaiman , Peter Chung, Kuniko Ikuhara, and Voltaire. After that came the industry panel with Ken Iyadomi, John O'Donnell, Minoru Takanashi, and Sandee Yamamoto. After this came the final part of the session for that night. The screening of the new Vampire Hunter D movie and one of the main reasons I wanted to go. The other being Yoshitaka Amano and Neil Gaiman.
1001 Nights: I loved the art and animation done for this. The score was exquisite as well. Truely a work of art. I hope that I'll be able to see it again sometime since it was done very well. 4.9 out of 5.0
Alice: Entirely done in CG it was quite impressive, the lines were witty and some of them were pretty funny. Subtitled and extremely enjoyable. I would like to see this one again as well. 4.0 out of 5.0
Vampire Hunter D: Oh the things I could say about this movie. Gods.. I loved it. Well worth the trip to New York and 18 + hours on a bus to see this one. I am not going to be able to wait for the actual release for this one. It's a must see. D and all the other characters were animated beautifully and the story was excellent. The characters were well developed and the symbiot kept the comedy alive with witty remarks like "Think of the money D.. Think of the money" The voices were very good as well. They seemed to fit the characters and even though I'll always be fond of the original symbiot's voice from the dubbed version I think the new voice was really good as well. 5.0 out of 5.0 (as if my friends didn't know and expect me to give this one a perfect...)
The Crüxshadows Concert:
This was a whole bunch of fun. Between escapades with Bondachu and getting to dance onstage it was an extremely memorable night.
